If you're anything like me, you've probably had your parents hover over you, asking you to quit playing your video games. But you just say: "please, one last game." The thing is, what people don't get sometimes is that for a kid with ADHD, video games can actually be really valuable. This probably seems like I'm making up excuses so...Read More
I got this message on the ADHD Kids Rock Facebook page a few years ago and thought that it was worth sharing: Got my son's school report today. One of the comments made by his teacher was disgusting. So, we wrote to the principal. Happy to share this if it encourages other parents that it's OK to advocate for your ADHD...Read More
Do you find yourself overly involved in your kid's hobbies? Do you ask too many questions about their friends? Are you always "hovering" over their shoulder as they do their homework? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this may just be a case of helicopter parenting. What is helicopter parenting? Here's the thing. We all...Read More
Who doesn't like a movie about the reincarnation of a Chinese warrior saving the world from an evil villain? The movie Wendy Wu Homecoming Warrior got me hooked on taking karate lessons. I was so obsessed that I pleaded with my mom for months to let me take karate. That was over 5 years ago, and now I'm working toward my first...Read More
So what about the slackers who just don't want to do homework? Chances are that's not your kid. Kids with ADHD try harder than anyone on the planet to do good, to fit in and to do their homework.Read More
Today is the last day I will be a high school student. On June 22, 2017 I wrote my last exam and my high school career has now officially ended. This made me want to stop and share a bit about how I feel right now before the big event. Tonight I Graduate, Thanks to My Resilience I did it. Against all odds including being...Read More
If you're wondering whether spending time with video games and online friends is a good idea, they're actually more helpful for ADHD kids than you may think. The internet gives us a place to make friends where we are not judged. One of my closest friends is in California -- a 2-day drive from where I live. He's a best bud. We met...Read More
I feel like I have the best parents in the world now that they understand me and my ADHD. It wasn't always that way. Having an ADHD Kid can be a huge challenge for parents. But learning these 3 most important lessons has changed our whole family. Parents, I hope these ideas will help you connect better with your ADHD Kids. We all...Read More
A couple of weeks ago, I was so stressed out at school that I left right in the middle of the day. Gone. Home. Have you ever felt so stressed, bored or frustrated at school that you were going to explode? Going home was literally my last resort strategy, but I just couldn't handle it anymore. I didn't have an angry explosion,...Read More
Last summer , a mom connected with me over Facebook. Sherry was hurt and frustrated with how the system can fail kids who have ADHD. She wanted to challenge parents of ADHD Kids -- to share their stories on this blog and even with their local media, and to help teachers learn to help kids who have ADHD. Sherry Cassidy made my...Read More
Hey, and Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends. I hope you'll write me some comments and tell me what you're thankful for. What's made a difference in your world this year? I'm thankful for YOU. And I wouldn't have had a chance to connect with so many of you if no one had cared to ask me what my own dream was. So I'm...Read More
Ever thought about quitting school? What do you think about kids being home schooled? One of the cool moms who connected with me on Facebook has decided to do just that -- she's one of a growing number of parents who are "unschooling" their kids at home.Read More
It's nice to be noticed. I feel really lucky to have a big community of people reading my blog and commenting on it and on Facebook. I thought I'd share some of the awesome notes I've received from the community, from parents, teachers and kids who like what I'm doing, and who are supportive. Here's a couple. Hi Jeff, I just want to...Read More
Please tell me this is a bad joke. I keep seeing blogs about the FDA approving a tranquilizer gun to calm kids with ADHD. WTF??
It's bad enough kids with ADHD kids get spanked and punished way more than other kids, now we are going to get shot at a distance by our well meaning parents when we are out of control. Put us to sleep so you don't have to deal with us!
Even if this is a joke it's not funny. When is the world going to start learning about ADHD and step up to help us instead of hurt us.
If a child shows signs of a serious physical illness, most parents immediately see a doctor and investigate all the treatment options. Unfortunately, when a child is showing signs of mental health issues, many parents do not recognize the signs, or are not so quick to respond. Parents are sometimes slow to seek help for mental illness...Read More
It's OK mom. I hate to admit it but I used to yell at Jeff every morning, afternoon and night until I learned he has ADHD and how much it impacts his ability to do things. From reading Jeff's ADHD Kids Rock's Facebook page, I realize that a lot of parents deal with the same sort of frustrations over day-to-day tasks when they're...Read More
People are angry at my parents for giving me ADHD medication.
When I was distracting the other kids and not doing my work the world was angry because I was being a derp. Now I'm a lot more focused and doing my work... and the world is angry (again!).
So... I want to know, what's behind this attitude that so many people seem to have -- that all drugs for ADHD and ADD are just plain BAD?
This stereotyping is hard on the kids. Let me tell you.
Today my teacher sent my mom an e-mail...
What was great about this message of support was it came early enough in the day that I got a call from mom to go to the counselling office and take my meds (they have a supply there). My mom also now knows I'm a week behind on this assignment and it's a big one so she can help make sure it's on my list either to do myself or to work on with my tutor.
Getting any child to do homework can be difficult at the best of times. But kids with ADHD need a little creative coaching from their parents and teachers. One of my favourite strategies is to use humour or fun to motivate kids. Combine learning the times tables with bouncing a basketball. Or help your child learn about fractions...Read More
Sometimes it takes an eye-opening event before others realize how much ADHD might affect your life. Here's what happened one day when I left my Auntie Barb in the men's bathroom at the park. I think you might get a kick out of hearing her tell it. It opened her eyes to the very real ways that having ADHD affects my life -- she...Read More
If you want me to do something, ask me. As a kid with ADHD, people often deal with me by raising their voices or becoming more stern in an effort to be more clear. Don't we all HATE getting told what to do? I have a backpack of burdens. A lot of things on my plate. But if you ask for my input, it's as though there's a...Read More
