ADHD Hacks: Never go to sleep with your phones!

Life is better now that I don’t go to sleep with my phone.

I know, weird, huh?  All the great games, movies, music, even a chance to text with friends at night… all gone.

It wasn’t my idea — it was my mom‘s.  (Yeah, it was a consequence.)  But strangely, I’ve noticed it’s making a difference.  I’m getting to school on time.  I have time to eat breakfast before leaving in the morning.  I’m happier. Seriously!

So, I thought I’d share it.  I think it qualifies as an ADHD Hack because for those of you who don’t know, most of the kids at school are going to sleep with their phones.  It’s become pretty normal stuff.

I’ve gone 2 months now, going to sleep without my phone.  At a certain time each night, I leave my phone in another room and my quality of sleep is way better than what it was when I slept with my phone. Simple.

I guess you could still leave it plugged in on the other side of your room if you needed the alarm but try keeping it away from you in bed.

Try it for a week and you will see what I mean, your quality of sleep will increase immensely and you will be less tired in the morning. Its very tempting to stay up all night playing games or watching Netflix but it’s not worth it.

Other Sleep Tips for Kids with ADHD

Here are some other things that make it easier to get a good night’s sleep with ADHD.  I used to have a lot of trouble winding down and going to sleep, and these all made a difference.

  • A shower or hot bath before bed.
  • I don’t know about you but I love clean sheets.
  • A dark room.
  • Go to bed as soon as you feel super tired so you don’t miss that feeling and end up awake all night.
  • Excercise.  If you’re not getting enough excercise every day, maybe try an activity like Tae Kwon Do (check out my post on Tae Kwon Do here). Some sports seem to be better for kids with ADHD — and martial arts is one of them.

Do you take your phone to bed with you? Try leaving it in another room for a few nights and let me know how it goes.

Fave Class: Mechanics "I've got the plans in my head for a motorized scooter with a gas-powered engine that I'm actually capable of building." ADHD Superpower: "If I'm determined to do something, literally nothing can stop me. Nothing. Not bribes, not bullets... nothing." Fave Food: Hashbrowns (the kind you buy frozen, in a bag) Career Goals: Telecommunications Guru Life-Changing Event: Winning the WDS Scholarship for Real Life School Achievement: Completing Math & Socials 10 in just 8 weeks this summer. "School's like 99% fluff. Summer school is that, minus the fluff." Biggest Struggle: Even though I take medication I still have trouble staying on task, doing boring homework, remembering not to swear when I am angry or staying still through assemblies. (That's where some of my strategies come in.) [/content-block] [content-block title="An Average Kid with ADHD" color="purple"] My ADHD has been really bad and given me every bad experience you can imagine for a kid. Before medication teachers took away my recess, my gym classes, they put me in the hall, I have been suspended from school, and I never did my work because even though my tests say I’m “gifted” I couldn’t do it. When I first learned I had ADHD I was so happy that I wasn’t bad or broken, it had a name and an explanation for what was going on. [/content-block]
